For the gentleman gamer who does not want to use spray varnish, I can heartily recommend Winsor & Newton acrylic matt varnish. I’ve never had any “white residue” problems with it, even if I have used it quite liberally on the figures that have been painted with Vallejo acrylics. I’ve recently started to use Army painter dips (brushing it on), and this works very well for the final matt finish.
